Product Application Guide
Application Procedure
1. Surface Preparation
The surface must be sound, clean, dry, and free from contamination, oil, grease, loose material, laitance, and previous poorly bonded coatings.
Concrete surfaces:
Remove surface laitance by grit blasting, water jetting, or another suitable mechanical preparation method. Any exposed blow holes or surface defects should be filled with a suitable epoxy repair paste such as Quickmast 341 before coating.
Steel surfaces:
Steel should be grit blasted to a bright finish meeting Swedish Standard SA 2½.
Do not apply over existing coatings unless the coating is Strongcoat EPW itself and the recommended overcoating window is maintained.
2. Mixing
Strongcoat EPW is supplied as a two-component system. Use a mechanically powered mixer or drill fitted with a suitable paddle.
- Stir each component separately to disperse any settlement.
- Add the entire contents of the hardener into the base.
- Mix for approximately 3 minutes.
- Continue mixing until the colour and consistency are uniform.
Do not part-mix packs unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.
3. Application
Strongcoat EPW-P can be applied by:
- Brush
- Roller
- Airless spray machine
No primer is required to apply this product.
Apply the first coat to achieve a continuous, uniform coating. Apply the second coat within the recommended overcoating time to ensure maximum adhesion between coats.
Recommended time between coats:
- 24 hours at 25°C
- 16 hours at 35°C
- 10 hours at 45°C
Do not apply when:
- Surface or ambient temperature is below 5°C
- Relative humidity exceeds 90%
- There is standing or running water
- The surface is wet
- The application area is not properly prepared
For high-temperature applications above 30°C, extra care should be taken because pot life and working time will be reduced.
4. Curing
Allow the coating to fully cure before filling the pool or exposing it to service conditions.
Full cure:
- 7 days at 25°C
- 4 days at 35°C
- 2 days at 45°C
Cooler temperatures may extend curing time.
Product FAQ
Is Strongcoat EPW-P suitable for swimming pools?
Strongcoat EPW-P is designed for water-retaining concrete and steel structures and is listed by the manufacturer as suitable for potable water retaining structures and reservoirs. It can be positioned as a swimming pool coating where project conditions are compatible, but pool water chemistry should be confirmed before use.
What colour is Strongcoat EPW-P?
Strongcoat EPW-P is light blue.
Can Strongcoat EPW-P be used on concrete pools?
Yes. It can be used on properly prepared concrete surfaces. Concrete must be sound, clean, dry, and free of contamination. Surface laitance should be removed mechanically, and blow holes or defects should be repaired before coating.
Can it be used on steel pools or steel tanks?
Yes. Strongcoat EPW is suitable for steel surfaces when properly prepared. Steel should be grit blasted to a bright finish meeting Swedish Standard SA 2½.
How many coats are required?
Strongcoat EPW-P is normally applied in 2 coats to achieve the recommended film build.
What is the coverage rate?
Approximate coverage is 0.75 kg/m² per 500 microns dry film thickness, applied in 2 coats.
How long should I wait between coats?
At 25°C, the recommended time between coats is 24 hours. At higher temperatures, the overcoating window is shorter: 16 hours at 35°C and 10 hours at 45°C.
How long before the pool can be filled?
Full cure is approximately 7 days at 25°C. Warmer temperatures can reduce the full cure time, but the coating should not be exposed to water service until it has fully cured.
Is Strongcoat EPW-P UV resistant?
Yes. The technical data sheet lists UV resistance as good, and the product is described as UV and weather resistant.
Is Strongcoat EPW-P flexible?
Yes. Strongcoat EPW is a flexible epoxy polysulphide coating and can bridge cracks up to approximately 1 mm.
Is it easy to clean?
Yes. Strongcoat EPW-P forms a seamless, glossy, glass-like surface that is easy to clean and does not encourage bacterial or fungal growth.
Does it resist chemicals?
Yes. Strongcoat EPW-P has resistance to a variety of chemicals, oils, fuels, sea water, and selected acids/alkalis. For swimming pool use, verify compatibility with chlorine, salt systems, pH adjusters, and cleaning chemicals used on the specific project.
Can it be applied over old paint?
No. The manufacturer notes that Strongcoat EPW should not be applied over existing coatings, except over itself when the specified overcoating time is maintained.
What tools can be used to apply it?
Strongcoat EPW-P can be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray machine.
What is the shelf life?
Strongcoat EPW has a shelf life of 12 months when stored in original unopened packs in dry conditions at room temperature.

Does this Swimming Pool Coating require a primer?
Strongcoat EPW-P can be directly applied to the concrete and does not require a primer.
